10 building blocks for success

What does it take for managers to motivate employees to achieve powerful results? Developing a strategy for employee engagement is the formula for an organization’s success, which starts with several initiatives geared towards strengthening the employee-manager relationship. We’re pleased to share The Employee Engagement Pyramid by David Zinger, which illustrates the most important fundamentals of employee engagement, thanks to The Globe and Mail’s recent post on the 10 building blocks for employee engagement. The post describes David Zinger’s 10 detailed steps to employee engagement, which make up the employee engagement pyramid and explain the building blocks for success:

  1. Achieve Results Sitting at the top of the pyramid, this step is geared towards empowering employees to drive results that are pre-set to determine an organizations’ success.
  1. Mark Progress Research indicates that marking progress each day at work is the key to motivation and employee engagement. Managers need to ensure that progress is visible, and mitigate the chance for setbacks.
  1. Maximize Performance Top performers should be recognized constantly with effective feedback, so that they set a precedent for others to follow.
  1. Foster recognition Managers must give positive feedback for accomplishments, so that employees understand their worth and are likely to repeat those behaviors to achieve desired results.
  1. Build Relationships Employee engagement is both strategic and collaborative. Research by the Harvard Business School found that the most outstanding performance was directly correlated to the ability to develop and maintain a strong network of relationships.
  1. Enliven Energy Zinger cites the importance of being caught up in a mission that is greater than ourselves. Energy, in all forms, is contagious and spreads through an organization like wild fire. Energy is what drives employees to succeed, and that energy is derived from being engaged.
  1. Leverage Strengths Similar to a coach, managers should focus on leveraging employees’ strengths to achieve results instead of weaknesses.
  1. Make Meaning Meaningful work is more likely to engage, sustain, and enrich people. If managers can influence their teams to drive results through meaningful achievements, then employees will feel a great sense of accomplishment and be engaged.
  1. Master Moments “Engagement resides in the moments” Zinger observes. “Each of the many connections you make has the potential to become a high point or low point in someone’s day”. It’s crucial for managers to understand their impact on employees, and focus on positive feedback and timely communication.
  1. Enhance Well-Being Managers must eliminate all toxicities from the workplace. Employees should leave work feeling enlivened, instead of depleted. Employees want a reason to be engaged and achieve desired results.

If managers were to improve one aspect of their daily routine to drive results, then they should emphasize the importance of employee engagement because of its direct correlation to individual and group performance, retention, turnover, and productivity.
